Orbis International
ORBIS International is a nonprofit global organization, aiming to treat and prevent blindness by strengthening the capacity of local eye health partners through capacity-building. Their international involvement in capacity-building ranges from clinical training and technical assistance to community education and health care reform.
As one of Noor Dubai’s international partners, ORBIS International works with Noor Dubai on a range of activities.
ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital
The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital is a functional hospital within a DC-10 aircraft, including operating theater, patient examination rooms, physician training facilities, and biomedical support functions. The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital visit to Dubai from September 7 to 14, 2008 marks the close relationship with Noor Dubai, and provides educational training and awareness programs for local and international ophthalmologists.
ORBIS Cyber-Sight
Additionally, ORBIS International is assisting Noor Dubai in achieving its therapeutic goals. Cyber-Sight is a telemedicine program developed by ORBIS International that enables ophthalmologists in developing countries to connect with internationally reknown expert ophthalmologists all over the world to diagnose and treat patients. Cyber-Sight allows the convenient transfer of textual and photographic ophthalmologic information via the Internet, while maintaining strict patient confidentiality.
Cyber-Sight also enables the patient’s local ophthalmologist or general physician to communicate the details of the patient’s condition to the Noor Dubai medical team. The program provides an opportunity for the local ophthalmologist or general physician to ask for advice or suggestions regarding any aspect of the patient’s condition. Ultimately, Cyber-Sight ensures that the patient has a “second opinion” before traveling to Dubai, and therefore, improves the overall efficiency and care delivery of the therapeutic program.
By facilitating this exchange, Cyber-Sight also makes the long-term post-operative management of the patient’s treatment program more convenient for both the patient and doctor. After the patient returns to their home country, local physicians follow up the case with external mentors using Cyber-Sight. This follow up ensures the efficient management of possible long-term post-operative complications.
